Law of the Garbage Truck

For a long time I have been toying with the idea of posting an article on Allah’s guidance to our prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h. and his friends (sahabah).
I have yet to complete my research on it but I saw a part of material posted here entitled “forgive those who hurt you”.

The title of that post, however, reminds me an e-mail from a friend entitled “Law of the Garbage Truck”. Searching the web on the subject I found this on www.bewareofgarbagetrucks.com(please go to the last para if you have seen this before ;)

Beware of Garbage Trucks!
By: David J. Pollay

How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant you're probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly one can get back their focus on what's important.

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab when my taxi driver told me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.''

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you.
When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy you did.

TOP: The Garbage Man life is an idealic ride...
...from vista to vista.

So this was it: 'The Law Of The Garbage Truck.' I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people: at work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I said, 'I'm not going to do it anymore.'

I began to see garbage trucks. Like in the movie 'The Sixth Sense,' the little boy said, 'I see Dead People.'
Well, now 'I see Garbage Trucks.' I see the load they're carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And like my Taxi Driver, I don't make it a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.

One of my favorite football players of all time, Walter Payton, did this every day on the football field. He would jump up as quickly as he hit the ground after being tackled. He never dwelled on a hit. Payton was ready to make the next play his best.
Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. Leaders and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best for the people they care about.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks takeover their day.

What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?

Here's my bet. You'll be happier.
Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so...
Love the people who treat you right.
Forget about the ones who don't.
Believe that everything happens for a reason.

If you get a chance, TAKE IT!
If it changes your life, LET IT!
Nobody said it would be easy...
They just promised it would be worth it!

Close to home... I have been telling members of my family that our hearts can be likened to small rooms. However big those rooms maybe, we should not fill them up with garbages (I relate garbages to slanders, gossips, worries, hate, anger, dissatisfaction and other people issues), as there will be little space left for us to put in perfumes and other nice staff (relating them to zikrs, search of ilms and knowledge, prayers, zakah etcetera).

Whatever you consider as garbages maybe..

I sincerely wish you

Have a garbage-free days ahead!

Salam Wan Sharif

I've read this before and have been practising it except that 'Wish them well' part. I haven't always done that ... yet. As in many things in life, it takes patience and persistence to perfect some things. It is hard but with practice can be done :)

How very true.

I am glad to have read this, it kinda explains why people can be so mean, cranky and whiny!

Salam Ayah Wang,

I could relate to this one..few years ago for sometime I got "stuck" in the garbage truck's situation, until one day when I suddenly realised that I was full with negative feelings inside of me, I chose to get away from it all..I avoided the things that turned me into one as much as I can.

Alhamdulillah I'm happier that way..and blogging with simple posts is my way of keeping to the track (thou once in a while I might de-tour..hehe..).

:-)

p/s - I'm on the same par with you, my second practice at the bowling arena around 100 je.. :-D

Mulan dearest,
I was reminded of it by a friend and to know you are equally reminded bring me great satisfaction.. Now that the PM has visited Klcc yesterday.. Is it time for you to rejoice.. Non?

Coffee Girl,
You always seem to me to be a very sensible girl.. Your unwritten law is similar to what I practiced when I am on my motorbike and in vicinity of those garbage trucks..;)
Have fruitful and enjoyable days ahead my friend..

Wan Sharif said...

Johan dearest,
In your line of work .. With Malaysian penchant for anything that have to do with the law.. So many not so positive new on lawyers ..and the general distrust of people in that profession.. I can expect many truckloads of rubbish to come your way at least on monthly basis..
So do take care my fren..

Wan Sharif said...

Cheqna dearest,
Glad to know that you manage to get out of the rut..
Always very glad to have your visit and super glad to have you sharing your experience..sometime the situation can result from our own dissatisfaction over something (read : not thankful enough)...
Alhamdullilah indeed for the serenity arrived from simple blogging.. Detours do give some kind of "perverse pleasure" sometimes.. Non!?
Thank you for your update on your bowling.. If I remembered correctly for a ten frame game I have an average of about three incidents where the bowling balls went into the gutter;) ..

Ayoh wang,
I have to admit, I am a garbage truck as well as being a dump site..you can't run from being both because at times it just happens whether it is from/to your bff, your sibling, your spouse, colleague.

I used to get irked and become pretty upset when people treated me as a dumpsite and I would accept all the garbage willingly thinking I was lending them an ear or being a shoulder to cry on but when I needed to unload my garbage to them, they shoved me off fearing that it might lead to backmouthing, backstabbing etc etc etc..Things happen.

What I do now is, I just keep on listening but not really hearing. The words go in the right ear and goes quickly out through the left nostril! At times, it does not even make it through the nostril but comes back out immediately where it came in.. Voila..happy dumper, happy Fida. Win win situation..at least I am there to be the friend she/he needs.

As for me, now, I unload on my blog..hehehehe..and to my hubby..he who knows me best!

Wan Sharif said...

Fida dearest,
After some time we get the hang of it.. Lending the ear I mean.. Hopefully Allah hinders us from being the dump site of those slanders, backstabbing etc... As long we are aware and in control of the situation .. We can always try to make the best of it.. Niat kena baik but situation pun kena baik juga..
You dump all into your blog?!.. Ouch!!!

Betul tuh Ayoh Wang. Usually I would really listen to those who need to vent out dissatisfaction..we need to do that sometimes kan..but when they start slandering, I know the limits..perlu ker nak mengata orang pakai baju tak kenalah, muka orang macam itu inilah..that is when I shut off. Listening but not hearing..jamming silently in my heart to the beat of Metallica.

I agree situation kena baik wif a good intention as well.

If one retires himself to a small outlandish place as I have done there is every chance the problems can somewhat be minimised.

Unfortunately, because garbage trucks themselves visit the area so irregularly we have to face the smell and swear at the garbage trucks that do not come to do the job!

salam Ayoh Wang,
lama tak singgah sini, suka post ni :) just want to share you something from my friend- the first to apologize is the bravest, the first to forgive is the strongest, and the first to forget is the happiest!

have a nice day!

Wan Sharif said...

FIFA dearest,
It is not always good to separate ourselves from the garbage trucks (neither it is always bad), in your situation.. When you have some control over it... You can always steer the conversation towards better and fruitful topics thus doing a very subtle dakwah ..a service to your friends... and the pahala will be tremendous and lasting if they keep practicing what you have sowed.. Fruitful and malice free conversations ;)
Gentle persuasions can only come from good friend.. If you are not considered as good friend you can not give good advices and subtle persuasion..Non?!

I will detailed the retirement thingy in my next post.. Am I to assume that you want me to carry out what you have started.. I honestly believe that I do not have the patience and the tenacity to do what you are doing..
As my food production investment has yet to be on successful track.. I believed I am not that secure to start living without good income.. My youngest have some 10 years to go thru if she is blessed to do what she wanted to do.. The son is keen to go to Japan and I believe he will need tons of money.. For sometime to come..
If genes are of any indication.. My great grands, grands and father lived to about a hundred.. Too long a time to live without a suitable income... I understand very well that all sustenances is Allah's alone and usaha tak mendatangkan bekas... But I enjoys oil prospecting.. Enjoys whatever Allah's has .. for me..
My spouse think that if we retire now and stay in Dungun.. her two lembah kelang sisters would have difficult time not to follow suit as their children are so very close to us.. and their husbands has been talking about moving back to Dungun on retirement.. Alasan ;))

Ayah Wan,
Salam.
Been a garbage truck all my life...picking up all the frustrations,anger,intimidation...until I learn to switch off momentarily .I buat tapisan keselamatan.I keep my distance if that relation would become toxic.

Tapi in the end ,I could count my friends just by one hand.Sedih juga.

A beautiful philosophy, Wan, and thank you for sharing it - it's a good reminder. My son just called and we had a conversation about this very thing - the change in perspective that makes us see something positive where we might be more inclined to see the negative........loved this post!

I was drafting a pantun for you and I find my good friend Sherry here! What a lovely surprise.

Sampah terhimpun di dalam peti
Baik dibuang di dalam parit
Kesalan hanya memakan hati
Tiada gunanya menanti perit

Waste overflows from on the ground
Awaiting delivery to the landfall
Regret only weighs you down
Forgiveness and acceptance heals all

Dear Anon,
They say you need to choose you friends.. in fact there was a saying (Hadith) that your religion is your friends religion..
If you believe that some of those garbage trucks are still a worthy friend .. maybe you should hint your displeasure of receiving garbage or being a garbage dump.. failing to get any favourable result would imperatively means you have to run away pronto!
I guess it is good for the mind to have few quality friends than to have many truckloads of garbages.. Non?!

Wan Sharif said...

Sherry Dearest,
Thank you for sharing your personal thought on the subject..
"the change in perspective that makes you see something positive" is a rather profound experience shared by you here is just great.
Do you notice Ninot's visit?..

Wan Sharif said...

Ninot,
I cannot applaud enough your effort in reviving the dying art of pantun..
thank you for your kind advices from your pantun.. however your English pantun is sweetly more straight to the point ;)
Like Pakcik Hassan.. I think you are teasing and forcing me to be what I can only hope to be.
Here is my effort

Kesalku bila isteri mengungkit
setelah diterima sepenuh hati
Tiadalah kesal resah dan perit
Redha pada takdir Ilahi

Here is that feeble attempt in English ;)

Regret comes when wife recounts
After forgiveness has been agreed
No regret to weigh me down
Total acceptance to all decreed.

Pst.. with your kind permission ;)
It is too taxing for me to seriously do pantun, syair and poems etc..
I guess I will just settle for occasional blogging ;))
