Heart Attacks And Drinking Warm Water (updated)

In the last posting I extolled the virtue of drinking water. Then I heard about "Heart attacks and drinking warm water", when I googled on the subject, I found many similar articles on the internet.. one of them is written by Armen Hareyan on 2008-06-24. There are also articles that say it is a myth as it is yet to be scientifically proven. That said here is the article.

The article is not only about drinking the warm water after your meal, but about Heart Attacks. The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals, not cold water, maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating.

The picture is from MedicalNet.com

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is very Harmful to have Cold Drink/Water during a meal. Because, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

French fries and Burgers are the biggest enemy of heart health. A coke after that gives more power to this demon. That are for those with western taste. On a similar note for us Malaysian, Roti Chanai (Pan cake of wheat flour fried using ghee or oil) and Nasi Lemak (Rice cooked with coconut milk) are the biggest enemy of heart health. A Teh Tarik (tea with milk -a Malaysian style concoction of sort) after that gives more ummph to the taste-bud and more power to this demon. Do try our level best to avoid them for our Heart's Health.

Common Symptoms Of Heart Attacks
A serious note about heart attacks - You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.

A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this message sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this & Send to a friend. It could save a life... So, please be a true friend and send this article to all your friends you care about.

It was only yesterday, I went to visit a colleague who is recuperating from an open heart surgery conducted after a chest pain during a course of heart attack. I have yet to visit another colleague who have the misfortune of having a stroke while having an open heart surgery.

I think in this few years I have visited more than five close friends who have open heart operations. Most of them very eager to share their experience and I found out the medical term they used are out of my vocabulary.

I believe it is time for me to learn more about the heart attack.. next post maybe.

Important Notes from the Readers (precious input on the subject matter)

Until one day, my maternal grandfather told my husband to drink very warm water first thing very morning i. e. as soon as he wakes up and even before he brushes his teeth. And it worked! Somehow, the very warm water had a calming effect on his colon and jump-started the morning in a relaxed way. So every morning, it has become a routine for us. Drink very warm water first, no matter where we are. (For more detail, kindly read her full comments to this post below- thank you Andrea for sharing with us your precious input).

Dah hampir sepuluh tahun tak minum air sejuk or ais (for about ten years I have not taken cold or iced drinks), and I do see the effects.

Sendi kurang sakit (less joint-pain),

perut kurang buncit (less protruding stomach),

gigi kurang sakit (sensitive teeth!)

(thank you VerseAnggerik for sharing with us your precious experience)

May Allah bless us all and we take refuge in Him from getting heart attack.

Ayoh Wang,
Prevention, as always, is always better than cure. I'd recommend chinese tea with every meal. With a little bit of lime too. yummm.... purrr....meow!

Dear Pakcik Wan,

My maternal grandfather who comes from China, used to remind us, when we were young, that cold drinks are bad for our health. And it includes drinking cold chinese tea which is like a taboo in the his house.

Of course, we used to pooh-pooh at his advice until a year or two ago, my husband started have alot of "wind" in his tummy and it gave him heartburn etc. He did the 'scopes and took meds to kill the bad bacteria but still kept burping alot. Until one day, an old man told him to drink very warm water first thing very morning ie as soon as he wakes up and even before he brushes his teeth. And it worked! Somehow, the very warm water had a calming effect on his colon and jump-started the morning in a relaxed way. So every morn, it has become a routine for us. Drink very warm water first, no matter where we are.

and I've heard that the Spanish custom is to drink after, not during, the meal. maybe some cultures get these things figured out sooner. :)

Salam Wan, that pic of the heart gives me the shivers!

I've heard the advice against drinking cold water before but never the reason behind it as you've explained here. It's more convincing this way.

Our practice is to take plenty of normal room temperature water and sugar-free fruit juice. The tips about warm water from you and Andrea sounds good - we'll start on that right away...

As far as roti canai, nasi lemak etc I think most people are aware of the hazards but just refuse to drop the habit - a bit like smoking - until it's too late.

Thanks for the warning Wan.

I like hot coffee and wonder if that can be argued as equivalent to hot water - just a matter of adding some coffee, suger and maybe some milk.

Adrea ,
I have updated this entry to include part of your comment under "Important Notes from the Readers"..
thank you for sharing (repetition here) ..
Do drop in again with your excellent comments (even without excellent comment.. also welcome lah)

Dmarie,
Welcome to my humble abode and thank you for sharing your thought on the subject..
I heard/share it somewhere that we should not drink during the meal as it can contribute to loss of breath (stamina?) later?..
Nice blogs you have there.. I am following it now...

Hi Uncle Lee,
I do noticed your affinity to cold drinks and hot or warm...wink*
If this entry manage to slow down any habit that you think you should modify.. I would consider it an incentive of sort to blog more..
I guess some 50 year habits would need something drastic (like eruption of Krakatoa) to happen for it to change.. I sincerely pray that nothing drastic happen to any of my friend, much less to you my good friend.

Yohteh,
Glad to know that you have been well advised.. now I wonder whether those advice are followed to the letter.. ha..ha.

Grandpa,
You are always welcome.. coming from you I would say it is a vote of confidence.
All those friends (of mine) that need procedures to be performed on their hearts have nasi lemak, roti chanai and teh tarik as their favorite food for breakfast and sometime for late supper as well!! That is a my simple correlation.. We know there may be other part of the story ..right!
Hopefully it is still not too late for us, InsyALLAH

Dear Abang Hassan,
You might have missed my entry previous to this.. a part of that long entry say ..
Know what doesn't count.
Caffeine and sodium can deplete your body of water. So even though soda and coffee contain water, they don't fully contribute to the water you need each day. A good rule of thumb is to not count any beverages containing caffeine or sodium towards you water intake at all.
The other day I heard somebody remarked that our condensed milk is not “real milk”. Now that might give us enough insight as to why teh tarik is so potent when taken together with nasi lemak or roti chanai. (P.S. All those friends (of mine) that need procedures to be performed on their hearts have nasi lemak, roti chanai and teh tarik as their favorite food for breakfast and sometime for late supper as well!! That is a my simple correlation.. We know there may be other part of the story, like those gulai kambing, soup ekor.. suratan Ilahi.. kifarah dosa etceteras right! )

Ayoh Wang,
I have limited my intake of cold and iced drinks since the birth of my 3rd child when my husband told me it wasn't good for a lady who has given birth.
I agree that taking water the first thing in the morning could help with digestion. It really works!!
My kids are also forbidden to take cold water which is strictly for a once in a while occasion to their dismay mostly.
I will show this post to my son so he knows I haven't been telling him lies. Thanks for sharing.
Like the saying goes 'Caring is Sharing'..;)

I think we all understand in general about healthy lifestyle and it is our responsibility to maintain our body kurniaan Allah. Our body is an amanah, so we must remember to take care of it.

Again, your good post is a timely reminder.

Dear Rosfida,
I believed your hubby was right when he told you the cold and iced drink wasn't good for a lady who has given birth.
Thank you for sharing your experience... taking water the first thing in the morning could really help with digestion.. it is something new for me to share with my family.
Glad to know that you are going to show this post to your son.
Thank you so much for being so kind with your comments.

You are welcome, Aishah.

When you mention that our body is an amanah, I believe your truly is also guilty of abusing this God-given body with those sportive activities, over consumption of gulai kambing, roti chanai, nasi lemak and teh tarik etceteras.

Again, your comment is a source of incentive for me.. Thank you

And am I glad to know the effects of such perseverance.

I will have to modify my post to include your comment.

Sir, the advice on drinking warm water every morning is totally the opposite of what I normally tell my friends with migraine ~ to drink a glass of cold water every morning to start the day. I got this tip from a makcik and so far, friends have been reporting how effective this has been for them, esp. those who are very prone to migraine attacks.

Now that I've read your post, I agree with the warm water habit and its benefits to your arteries and heart. But I may have unintentionally given bad advice to my friends on the cold water habit... camno tu?

Wan Sharif said...

Dear Nin,
Plain water, warm or cold is good for our body. My sister used to promote 4 glasses of plain water to be consumed before dawn.. for proper body cleansing etceteras..
So if your friend found that cold water is good for their migraine.. so be it.. you can recommend warm water so that not only it may work for migraine.. it also took care of arteries.
I believe your good friend will be reasonable enough to listen to new suggestion after all she did follow you earlier suggestion.
Thank you for sharing your precious personal experience

MINTI, a Parenting Group (www.minti.com) stated in a blog post dated
March 14, 2008, confirmed that this is NOT TRUE and an EMAIL HOAX.
While it definitely can't hurt you, keep in mind that warm water does
not break down your food or aid in disgestion, it is the hydrochloric
acid in your stomach. The funniest thing about the email is that it
doesn't even mention heart attacks being caused by not drinking warm
water, it goes on about you getting cancer instead

Wan Sharif said...

Stephendisher,
Thank you so much for your kindness to alert me on the possibility that drinking warm water does not aid digestion.. perhaps.. it is their way of emphasizing the effect of drinking cold water instead of warm water during or after the meal.. Non?!
